Materials
Foam
Polyurethane Foam surfboard blanks have been the industry standard for many years. A denser foam to EPS, PU is said to handle chop better and provide a solid feeling underfoot.
EPS-Expanded Polystyrene surfboard blanks are a lighter more buoyant foam. EPS will feel more lively underfoot and react a lot faster.
FibreGlass Cloth
We use a variety of Industry Specific Aerialite* Fibreglass Cloths to Wrap our Hand Shaped Blanks.
4oz - Light weight, commonly used as standard in Performance Board Construction.
6oz - Slightly heavier and Stronger than 4oz, often used for heavier riders or those after a stronger board.
Bi-axial - Applied to some of our Stringerless Cores for extra strength, double bias fibreglass cloth has opposing layers of fibres running diagonally at 45 degrees to the length of the cloth.
FlAX FIBRE
In an attempt to further reduce the carbon footprint of each build we have started to incorporate flax fibre to replace some of the fibreglass cloth used when laminating, Through testing we have found that by incorporating flax fibre (especially on EPS blanks there is an increase in stiffness and strength
RESIN
Epoxy- Kinetix Epoxy Resin has been especially formulated to make the clearest and whitest boards possible on the market. R110X resin is significantly brighter in the sun!
Kinetix has a high resistance to yellowing and is formulated to prevent the effects of UV and time discolouration. This superior formula will extend the life of a surfboard and help to retain flex characteristics. It is important when you hear the term EPOXY being used not to refer to EPS as they are very different materials. Typically the average surfer will not feel the difference between Epoxy and PU resins.
Polyesther resin- Here at BearBones Surfco we choose NOT to work with PE resin (Special request and LongBoards only). It is extremely toxic and not only harmful to the people involved with Lamination but also to the Planet! PE is inferior to epoxy in that it will become brittle, discolour and lose its flex roughly 3x faster than Epoxy.
Note: Epoxy is a lot more expensive than PE resin, this is typically why Surfboard manufactures are hesitant to incorporate it. We have made the decision to wear the additional cost of epoxy and provide a product that will be similar in price to those made with PE. Don't settle of inferior materials, while PE has specific flow characteristics, Epoxy resin will maintain that new board feeling a lot longer.
Bio-Resin- Entropy Super-Sap is a clear, USDA Bio-Preferred and Certified environmentally friendly, laminating and coating epoxy system. Equipped with industry leading UV stability, it’s ideal for applications that require clear, low yellowing finishes. For a 'Greener' Surfboard go Entropy
At BearBones SurfCo , We Use either Entropy or the new Kinetix Bio Content resin as standard in ALL custom Builds!
